Middletown Public Schools will mark School Lunch Hero Day Friday. The day provides an opportunity for students, families, school staff, and the community to thank those who provide healthy meals to 4,800 students each school day.

MIDDLETOWN — Between preparing healthy food, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, Middletown Public Schools nutrition professionals have a lot on their plate, according to a press release.
To celebrate their hard work and commitment, the district will celebrate School Lunch Hero Day Friday. It has been celebrated since 2013, and provides an opportunity for students, families, school staff, and the community to thank those who provide healthy meals to 4,800 students each school day, the news release said.
This year, the effort is spearheaded by the food services management team.
“School nutrition employees must balance many roles and follow numerous federal, state, and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in schools,” Food and Nutrition Manager Randall Mel said in a prepared statement.
The importance and nutritional value of school meals are well documented. For many children, school lunch is the most important and nutrient-rich meal of their day.
Each school day, the district serves over 1,200 breakfasts, 3,000 lunches and 400 snacks. The elementary schools offer five lunch options daily, and the middle school has 12. The high school offers more than 25 customizable options for meals.
This school year, thanks to federal funds, all meals are free of charge.
